What Makes Suzuki Philosophy of Music Education Different?
The “Suzuki Triangle”, the relationship between the child, the parent, and the teacher, is essential in the Suzuki approach. Parents and children learn to work together and to successfully navigate the ups and downs of acquiring a skill.
In today’s society we are often asked to drop off our children at their activities. Activities like dance, basketball, art class, and even school, the parent is often excluded from the learning relationship. Today we see a huge emphasis being put on becoming independent learners outside of the family relationship.
In contrast, in the Suzuki philosophy, parents are asked to be intimately involved.
“I am mentally preparing myself for the five-year old mind. I want to come down to their physical limitations and up to their sense of wonder and awe.”
Shinichi SuzukiMy boys have played piano with Sue for over 10 years. Each boy presents his own set of challenges. Sue has an incredible ability to adjust not only to day-to-day day moods and attitudes, but also to teach at levels appropriate for toddlers to teens. More than anything, Sue listens and teaches with her heart.
Our daughter, now a young teen, still loves lessons with Sue. Piano continues to bring her great pleasure. As parents, we see a broader impact: She has learned how small, daily effort can bring positive results — in school and in many other endeavors.
